Bizz Johnson's Southside Scramble
Bizz Johnson's Southside Scramble is a trail racing event in the Susan River Canyon that starts and finishes at the Hobo Camp Day Use Area in Susanville, CA. The event offers three distance options and uses both the Bizz Johnson Trail and the South Side Trail for outbound and return segments.
- 22K Dirty Devil's 22K
- 14K Tunnel's Blast 14K
- 7K Hobo Special 7K
The 22K follows a fire road above Hobo Camp, merges onto the Bizz Johnson Trail to Devil's Corral, then drops to the Susan River and crosses a seasonal foot bridge to return on the South Side Trail, which includes rockslides, vista points, and flowy singletrack back to Hobo Camp.
The 14K begins on the fire road, merges onto the Bizz Johnson Trail to the first railroad tunnel entrance, then detours onto singletrack that climbs above the tunnel to reach the South Side Trail for the return to Hobo Camp.
The 7K uses the fire road and the Bizz Johnson Trail up to the Twin Bridges Access connector, then joins the South Side Trail for a faster, flowy singletrack return. In odd-numbered years the course is reversed and the race director may alter the course on occasion; the course is marked for navigation.
Finish-area amenities include cold beverages, snacks, barbecue hotdogs for finishers, and access to the Susan River for a dip. Families and friends may bring chairs or canopies and use the day-use BBQ grills. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
