Event Overview

The Barr Trail Mountain Race is an established summer trail running event located in Manitou Springs, Colorado. The race takes place on the Pikes Peak Barr Trail and operates under a special use permit from the Pike National Forest. This event is designed as a cup-less race, requiring participants to carry their own refillable cups or reservoirs for hydration and nutrition during the run.

Course Details

The course covers a total distance of 12.6 miles. The route begins at the Cog Railway Station at an elevation of 6,570 feet. Runners ascend the Barr Trail up to Barr Camp, which sits at 10,200 feet. Upon reaching Barr Camp, participants turn around and descend the same trail to reach the finish line at the Barr Trailhead.

Series Participation

This event is a component of the Garden to Peak Challenge, formerly known as the Triple Crown of Running. To complete this challenge, runners must finish three specific events within mandatory cut-off times:

  • Garden of the Gods 10-Mile Run
  • Barr Trail Mountain Race
  • Pikes Peak Ascent or Pikes Peak Marathon

Participants who complete all three races in the series become eligible for specific awards and recognition. There is no separate registration for the challenge, as finishers of all three events are entered automatically.

History

The race was established in 2000 to bring mountain running athletes to Pikes Peak. It was founded by trail running proponents to highlight the technical terrain of the Colorado Springs area. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
