Badwater 135
The Badwater 135 Ultramarathon is an invitational, nonstop foot race covering 135 miles (217 km) from Badwater Basin in Death Valley to Whitney Portal on Mt Whitney. The course rises from the lowest elevation in North America at Badwater Basin (about 280 feet below sea level) to Whitney Portal (about 8,300 feet), with roughly 14,600 feet (4,450 m) of cumulative ascent and 6,100 feet (1,859 m) of cumulative descent. The route crosses three mountain ranges and passes landmarks such as Mushroom Rock, Furnace Creek, Devil’s Cornfield, Stovepipe Wells, Panamint Springs, Darwin, Keeler, Lone Pine, and the Alabama Hills.
The field is invitational and is limited to about 100 athletes from many countries and states. Entrants must meet published qualifying standards and complete application and paperwork within set deadlines. Each competitor must be accompanied by a single support vehicle and a crew of two to four people; crew members must meet safety and reflectivity requirements and carry specified equipment. Competitors must pass mandatory time cut offs at several milepoints and must finish within the 45 hour time limit to be official finishers.
Race operations require special use permits from multiple agencies and the exact route may be subject to change. All competitors receive event items; finishers within the time limit receive a finisher shirt and the Badwater 135 belt buckle. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
