Bad Little Trail Run - 8mile Run and 2.5mile run/walk
The Bad Little Trail Run is a trail running event in Whitneyville, Maine, through the Machias River Preserve and along the Downeast Sunrise Trail. The event includes two course options and finishes where it starts in Whitneyville. Post-race awards follow the races, and the event includes a communal potluck and BBQ. Entrants receive a finisher gift and are entered in a free raffle for a RunningWarehouse gift certificate valued at $100.
Both courses begin on the multi-use Sunrise Trail adjacent to the Whitneyville access parking lot. After a short section on wide, level gravel the route crosses the Machias River on an old railroad bridge and the courses split. The Homestead Trail is narrow, twisting, undulating, sometimes muddy and slippery, but described as well maintained and mainly singletrack. The 8 mile course continues onto the Heritage and Munson Pitch singletrack trails, runs alongside the Machias River for several miles with some grassy and rooty sections, then returns via the Sunrise and Homestead trails. Courses are marked with blue surveyors flags; runners should keep flags on the right and note that a cluster of flags indicates a turn or junction.
Award categories include top three men and women and age groups from 17 and under through 70 plus. Washington County youth may run for free. Registration opens in August and closes in late September; day of registration is limited. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
