About the race
The Backyard Ultra of Northern Utah is scheduled for May 22, 2027, in Mantua, Utah, at Mantua Reservoir near 500 N Main Street. The course uses the Mantua Reservoir Trail, an exact loop of 4.1 miles with no out-and-back segments. The trail surface is described as flat and fast with firm dirt and some gravel.
The event follows the Backyard Ultra format, where runners complete repeated loops and may continue for as many laps as they choose. The format does not require a fixed total distance, allowing participants to stop when they wish. The organizer notes the race appeals to runners trying an initial ultra distance as well as to experienced runners aiming to exceed 100 miles or reach higher cumulative distances.
Pre-registration opens on October 10, 2026. Organizers report they are unable to obtain the official race permit at this time while Mantua Reservoir may transition to Utah State Parks management; credit cards will not be charged until the permit is official. Registration is expected to fill and closes in mid May 2027. The posted entry fee is USD 168.65.
The route passes the reservoir shoreline and surrounding farmland and hillsides. Spring scenery may include the Mantua Poppy Fields and local wildlife, and temperatures in May are expected to be mild for running. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
