The course is run counter-clockwise around the Tolkien Trail, beginning on the avenue at the Stonyhurst College grounds and passing through the village of Hurst Green. The route descends a field referred to as "Mount Doom", follows the Ribble River past an aqueduct (built in 1880), and approaches Cromwell Bridge (built in 1562) before entering ancient woodland. The return leads back to Stonyhurst College for the finish.
