Southern Rail Trail
The Southern Rail Trail is a multi-distance running event organised by Elite Energy along the Great Southern Rail Trail in South Gippsland, Victoria. The event has been postponed to 29 May 2027 due to operational challenges and increased costs linked to a fuel crisis and higher fuel levies. The organiser describes itself as a small, family-owned business and asks entrants to check their inbox for entry details and next steps.
The course is predominantly flat and follows the former railway corridor, passing through historic towns and restored railway features. Noted places on the route include Toora, Foster and Meeniyan, and runners encounter old railway stations, heritage markers and several restored trestle bridges. The wider region sits on the southern fringe of mainland Australia and is described as about ninety minutes from Melbourne.
Race formats and special arrangements include team options for longer distances and a presentation breakfast for some finishers. Elite Energy plans to be pin-free by 2026 and offers reusable BibSnaps for purchase as part of entries or at the event; bringing pins remains an option. Distances offered cover a range from a short family dash to an ultramarathon along the trail. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
