Southern Rail Trail
The Southern Rail Trail run is organised by Elite Energy and has been postponed to 29 May 2027. The organiser states the decision followed operational challenges and rising costs related to a fuel crisis that affected event logistics and supply chains.
The event follows the Great Southern Rail Trail in Victoria and is described as predominantly flat. The course passes small towns including Toora, Foster and Meeniyan, and features restored trestle bridges, old railway stations and heritage markers. The route runs through rolling farmland, forested sections and coastal views near Wilsons Promontory.
Distances offered include:
- 100 km Port Welshpool to Leongatha via Alberton
- 72 km Port Welshpool to Leongatha
- 42.2 km Fish Creek to Leongatha
- 21.1 km Stony Creek to Leongatha
- 10 km Leongatha out and back
- 5 km Leongatha out and back fun run
- 2 km Family Dash in Leongatha
The 100 km event accepts individual entries and teams of two and four. The 72 km event accepts individual entries and teams of three. Finishers of the 100 km and 72 km events are noted to attend a presentation breakfast. The organiser plans to move to a pin free system by 2026 and offers reusable BibSnaps as part of entry or for purchase at the event; traditional pins may be used if brought by participants.
