MD Heat Trail Race : Elkridge, MD

The event offers two trail distances:

  • 25K
  • 50K

The course takes place in the Patapsco Pickall Area near Johnnycake Road. It is primarily rolling single track with over 2000 feet of vertical gain, two river crossings, and a short paved section through a parking area. Some sections are very technical and rocky while others are smoother and runnable. The layout includes three out-and-back sections, one of which reaches Valley Overlook where participants must pick up a wrist band. 50K competitors complete two loops of the 25K course and are required to collect a wrist band at the overlook on each loop; two wrist bands are required for an official finish. Competitors are generally allotted about five hours per loop, and athletes who complete the first loop after noon are not permitted to begin a second loop.

Aid stations are located at approximately 2 miles, 5.25 miles, 8 miles, 11.5 miles, and 16 miles. Each station offers Tailwind and water plus real food options; gels are not provided so athletes who use them should carry their own.

The start and finish area is centered on Shelter 707 with adjacent parking, bathrooms, and two large pavilions. Parking on site is limited. Volunteers are recruited to help with event operations. A post-race gathering with food and beer is held at the pavilions. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
