Course and Location
The Marin Ultra Challenge (MUC) is a trail race taking place in Marin County. The 11th edition of the event will be held on Saturday, March 14, 2026. The journey starts on Rodeo Beach and the courses traverse the Marin Headlands, Mount Tamalpais, and Muir Woods. The terrain includes exposed fire roads and technical single-track trails under redwood canopies. The event offers two distances:
- 50 Mile with approximately 11,000 feet of elevation gain.
- 50K.
Event Information
There is an overall participant capacity of 500 runners across both distances. As of February 14, 2026, the event is sold out, with a waitlist in operation. Registration for the waitlist closes on Sunday, March 8, 2026. A timing service with aid station tracking is provided for a $3 fee. Free parking is available in areas surrounding the start/finish at Rodeo Beach, including along Mitchell Road and at the Smith Road Parking Lot.
Time Limits and Requirements
There is a 14.5-hour time limit for the 50 Mile race and a 10-hour limit for the 50K. All runners must be off the course by 8:30 PM. Runners expecting to be on the course after sunset are advised to have a headlamp. Drop bags are available at designated aid stations. Aid stations provide items like water, Skratch Hydration Mix, soda, fruit, potatoes, sandwiches, and cookies. Runners are encouraged to carry at least one 20-ounce bottle.
Awards and Extras
For the 50 Mile, the top three male and female finishers receive cash prizes: $1,000 for first, $500 for second, and $250 for third. All 50 Mile finishers receive a custom medal and a trucker hat. All 50K finishers receive a medal and a custom printed drinking glass. Overall winners for each distance receive a custom award, and age-group medals are awarded three deep in multiple categories. A commemorative shirt is guaranteed for those who register by February 28, 2026. The event also features a separate 50/50 Challenge for runners completing both the Monterey Ultra 50 Miler and the Marin Ultra Challenge 50 Miler.
