The event includes an overnight element for the weekend format and a single-day marathon option. In 2025 the event marks its 55th year.
Distances
- 21.3 km one-way crossing measured by a steel wheel
- 42.195 km marathon option (starts about 400 m into the forest)
Course, logistics and facilities
The one-way crossing distance from designated start to finish is measured as 21.3 km; the marathon distance is adjusted by a short forest start. The Border Track is classified as a Class 4 track: distinct tracks with junctions signposted, rough surfaces with exposed roots and rocks, variable width, muddy sections, steep grades, and possible overgrowth and natural hazards. Runners should carry ankle-supporting footwear and be self-reliant for navigation and basic first aid.
Water is available only at both course ends and water plus hydrolyte at the marathon turn. There are no formal water stations on the 21.3 km between ends, so runners must carry their own fluids and bring a personal cup. Race bibs are issued from Race Headquarters at the Binna Burra campsite and the same bib may be used for both days. Sweepers follow the course behind the last runners. A casual social gathering, called "Fellowship on the Green," is held on Saturday afternoon; Groom's Cottage at Binna Burra is licenced and sells beverages and food platters. A compulsory 3-minute stop at O'Reilly's applies to marathon competitors. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
