Lamington Classic
The Lamington Classic is a trail run established in 1970 and described as Australia’s oldest trail race. The route follows the Border Track through parts of the World Heritage listed rainforest of Lamington National Park, between Binna Burra and Green Mountain (O'Reilly's).
Distances offered:
- 21.3 km one-way crossing between the designated start and finish points.
- 42.195 km double crossing that starts about 400 metres into the forest to obtain the official marathon distance.
The measured one-way distance is recorded using a steel wheel. The usual format includes running from O'Reilly's to Binna Burra with an overnight stay at Binna Burra, and a return crossing from Binna Burra to O'Reilly's via the Border Track.
Entry rules and compulsory items:
- 42.195 km competitors must have completed at least one "Hostile" trail race of 30 km or longer.
- 21.3 km competitors must have completed one road 21.1 km race.
- Marathon competitors must stop for a compulsory three minute pause at O'Reilly's or face disqualification.
- Competitors must carry compulsory gear including fluid (at least 1 litre for the marathon, 600 ml for the 21.3 km) and a compression bandage. Competitors should bring their own cup.
Trail and safety information: The course is Class 4 walking track with rough surfaces, exposed roots, muddy sections, steep grades and possible overgrowth. Water is provided only at both ends of the course; there are no formal drink stations in between, so participants must plan hydration. Tail sweepers carry basic first aid and are normally 15 to 30 minutes behind the last runner. If a runner becomes incapacitated, extraction from the forest can take several hours; stretcher carry out is used where required and any helicopter evacuation decisions and costs are managed by the race medical team and Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service. Presentations are held on both race days with trophies and no prize money; the registration fee includes lunch. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
