Kaniksu Trail Runs : Frater Lake, Colville National Forest
Kaniksu Trail Runs is a weekend of mountain trail racing in the Lower Selkirk Mountain Range near Frater Lake in the Colville National Forest, WA. Multiple individual and team events use mostly single-track trails, forest terrain, and summit sections around Granite Peak. Several courses include aid stations named in course notes and minimal dirt-road sections on some routes.
Key course features include sustained climbing and descending, rocky summit terrain on the out-and-back to Granite Peak, and notable elevation gain on longer races. The 50-mile course comprises an 18-mile out-and-back to Granite Peak plus a 32-mile loop and lists 11,100 feet of elevation gain with a 20-hour cut-off. The 50K route is described as a lollipop course with about 7,000 feet of gain and a 12-hour cut-off. A 29K out-and-back climbs roughly 2,500 feet and has an 8-hour cut-off. A shorter point-to-point "Half-ish" course uses single-track roller coaster terrain and has a 5-hour cut-off.
A memorial ruck relay is held over the 50-mile course with teams of 2 to 5 legs, minimum pack weights for male and female participants, and a 20-hour time limit; portions of proceeds support a memorial fund and food bank donations. A separate Beer Mile event runs short laps with loaded and unloaded categories and specific consumption rules. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
