Course, logistics and requirements
The 100-mile race is an out-and-back from Waterville Valley to the South Moat area and back, traversing multiple peaks and long mountain ridges. The 50-mile and 20-mile courses follow ridgelines and forest trails and include long technical sections; the 50-mile route summits several high peaks. Multiple aid stations are placed around the courses and drop bags are permitted at aid stations (the 20-mile event has no midrace drop bags). Some short highway sections require wearing a neon reflective vest.
Crew access is restricted at remote aid stations; crew may volunteer at aid stations but crew assistance outside volunteer shifts is not allowed. Pacers are allowed from specified aid stations but must carry the same required gear and complete a gear check. Mandatory gear lists are enforced and include navigation (GPX file and map), minimum fluids, a water filter, food, warm and rain layers, headlamp and extra batteries, communication device, emergency blanket and a first aid kit. Qualifications are required for the longer distances (proof of recent long mountain efforts). Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
