The Hippo Social Club facility and nearby trail system provide wooded, rolling singletrack with small creeks, some bridges, and generally modest elevation change with occasional tight turns.

The course uses a roughly 5 mile loop with a shortcut for the 5K and 10K. The 10K is two laps of the 5K route; the 50K starts with a 1.1 mile lap then six 5 mile laps. Course wayfinding includes orange caution tape, yellow arrows, distance signs, confidence markers, and reflectors for low light. Aid stations occur at least every three miles and supply water, sodas, Tailwind, Saltstick, snacks, and finish line drinks.
Ruck rules require a pack with mandatory weight checked before the start and at the finish. Required weight is 20 lb for participants under 150 lb and 30 lb for participants over 150 lb; weight must be carried on the back and cannot be consumable or wearable. The Hippo Haul assigns each competitor a concrete hippo weight and includes mandatory strength stations about every quarter to half mile.
The event follows Leave No Trace principles and is cupless. Collapsible cups are available for purchase on site. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
