Hatcher Pass Races
The Hatcher Pass Races take place on Hatcher Pass Road between Hatcher Pass Lodge and Willow, Alaska. The event includes multiple course options that follow the mountain pass roadway and use the same stretches between the lodge and Willow.
- Hatcher Pass 50 (about 54 miles)
- Hatcher Pass Marathon (slightly longer than 26.2 miles)
- Marathon and 50 Mile Relays for three person teams
The Marathon route gains about 3,900 ft in elevation, with the first 25 miles largely uphill and the final mile-plus a steep downhill to the finish. The 50 Mile route gains about 5,000 ft and uses the Marathon course as its turnaround loop, effectively combining two marathon-length segments.
There are seven aid stations spaced roughly every 2 to 5 miles. Aid stations provide water, electrolytes, race fuel, and snacks. 50 Mile participants will pass each aid station twice. Relay exchange zones are at designated aid stations.
Rules on pacers and crew differ by event. No pacers are allowed for the Marathon. Relay teams must consist of three runners. For the 50 Mile, one pacer and one crew vehicle are allowed per runner; pacers must wear a pacer bib and may not run more than 30 miles. Crew vehicles must use roadside pullouts and must not follow or block traffic.
Required gear includes a minimum 16 oz water bottle and 400 calories. 50 Mile participants also require a headlamp and a hi-visibility vest. Recommended items include bear spray, a light jacket, hat, and gloves.
Parking is limited and varies by start location. Independence Mine parking requires an Alaska State Park permit available on site for a fee. The race is point to point; there is no race shuttle and participants are responsible for their own transportation. Drop bags are accepted at the start, must be marked with the participant name, and will be transported to the finish. Organizers are not responsible for lost items.
