Course, support and logistics

The Marathon has about 3,900 ft of total elevation gain, with the first 25 miles mostly uphill and the final mile downhill. The 50 Mile total elevation gain is about 5,000 ft; it starts with a steep climb, then descends to the marathon turnaround before returning along the marathon course. There are seven aid stations spaced every 2-5 miles supplying water, electrolytes, race fuel, and snacks; 50 Mile participants pass each aid station twice.

Relay teams must consist of three runners; each relay member runs one 8-9 mile leg for the Marathon relay or two legs for the 50 Mile relay. Pacers are not allowed for the Marathon. One pacer and one crew vehicle are permitted per 50 Mile participant with rules on bibs and distance. Parking is limited; 50 Mile participants use the Independence Mine lower lot and must have an Alaska State Park permit ($5). The race is point-to-point and there is no shuttle. Drop bags taken at the start will be transported to the finish and must be marked with the participant name. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
