About the race
The Great Whernside fell race on 19 September 2026 runs from Scabbate Gate, Kettlewell to the summit of Great Whernside and back. The course covers 4 mile with 1558 ft of ascent and uses open fell terrain.
The race starts in the field at the bottom of the fell where Scabbate Gate lane crosses Dowber Gill Beck. The initial section is on grass, following track and path through fields uphill to the cottage at Hag Dyke. Runners then pass through a gate onto the fell where the terrain becomes rougher: a rocky scramble, a short stretch of peat and bog, and a final steep rocky ascent to the summit cairn. The return follows the same ground, either crossing heather directly or descending by the path. Juniors start with the seniors but turn before the top.
Registration takes place in the car parking field. Entry is for seniors only, over 16, with a stated entry fee of £8. A parking field has been arranged on the road back out to Conistone past the Kettlewell campsite and is offered at no charge; this parking is about 0.4 mile from the start. Alternatively use the main village car park where toilets are available. Participants are asked not to park on the campsite or to use campsite facilities unless specified by the organisers. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
