Great Whernside Fell Race
The event is a 4 mile fell race with approximately 1558 ft of ascent, running from Scabbate Gate near Kettlewell to the summit of Great Whernside and back. The route starts in the field where Scabbate Gate lane crosses Dowber Gill Beck.
The initial climb is on grass, following track and path uphill through fields to the cottage at Hag Dyke. After passing through the gate onto the open fell the terrain becomes rough: a rocky scramble over uneven ground, a short stretch of peat and bog, then a final steep ascent over rocky ground to the cairn. The return follows either a direct line across heather or the descent path back to the start.
Juniors set off at the same time as seniors but turn before the top. The race is for seniors only if entrants are over 16. Entry for seniors is £8. Registration is handled in the car parking field. A parking field has been arranged on the road back out to Conistone, just past the Kettlewell campsite; there is no charge and it is about 0.4 mile from that field to the start. Alternatively use the main village car park where toilets are available. Toilets are also available at the campsite adjacent to the start field.
Course record times include 00:28:38 (2007) and 00:33:41 (2015). Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
