Goyt Valley Challenge

The Goyt Valley Challenge is an organised walking event on Saturday 3 October 2026 with start and finish at Buxton Community School, College Road, Buxton SK17 9EA. The event is run by High Peak LDWA and offers route choices through the western Peak District.

Distances offered:

  • 26.2 miles - long route through the western Peak District via Axe Edge, Goyt Valley, Shining Tor, Lamaload Reservoir, Kettleshulme, Taxal Moor and Fernilee Dam; total ascent about 4000 ft.
  • 14.3 miles - short route to Axe Edge and the Goyt Valley, returning via Fernilee Dam; total ascent about 2000 ft.

Car parking is at the College Road entrance as directed by marshals, who may allocate alternative parking if necessary. Participants will be timed using the Fabian4 system and wristbands must be returned at the finish. Under 18s may take part only if accompanied by a responsible adult; the entrant accepts responsibility for anyone under 18.

Route terrain includes moorland and areas within the Peak District National Park, so participants should carry suitable footwear, waterproofs, warm clothing, map, compass and whistle. No dogs are allowed. Checkpoints provide refreshments and a hot meal is available at the finish; limited water is available at Checkpoint 1. Dietary options include vegetarian, vegan and gluten free where specified. Finishers can request a certificate. A bag drop will operate at the event headquarters.
