Goyt Valley Challenge

The Goyt Valley Challenge is a Long Distance Walkers Association challenge event organised by the High Peak local group in the Central England / Peak District region. The event is based at Buxton Community School, College Road, Buxton, Derbyshire SK17 9EA (grid reference SK054725). Car parking is available at the College Road entrance and marshals may direct participants to alternative parking if required.

  • 14.3 miles to Axe Edge and Goyt Valley returning via Fernilee Dam; ascent 2000 ft.

The long route passes through the Western Peak District and includes Axe Edge, Goyt Valley, Shining Tor, Lamaload Reservoir, Kettleshulme, Taxal Moor and Fernilee Dam. The shorter route goes to Axe Edge and the Goyt Valley and returns via Fernilee Dam to Buxton.

Under 18s are welcome but must be accompanied by a responsible adult; the entrant accepting responsibility is required on entry. Parts of the routes cross Peak District National Park and moorland so participants should carry appropriate equipment for terrain and weather, for example suitable footwear, waterproofs, warm clothing, map, compass and whistle. Dogs are not allowed. Refreshments are provided at checkpoints and a hot meal is available at the finish.
