Goyt Valley Challenge : event overview

The Goyt Valley Challenge takes place on Saturday 4 October 2025, starting and finishing at Buxton Community School, College Road, Buxton, Derbyshire SK17 9EA. The event is organised by LDWA - High Peak. Entries are currently full and new entries are placed on a waiting list; the entry period ran from 1 March 2025 to 27 September 2025. Entry fees are £16.00 for LDWA members and £22.00 for non-members. There are 301 participants listed and 23 on the waiting list. There are no refunds and non-LDWA members are not covered by LDWA insurance.

Routes, facilities and requirements

  • 26.2 miles (long route) : about 4000 ft total ascent.
  • 14.3 miles (short route) : about 2000 ft total ascent.

The long route passes Axe Edge, Goyt Valley, Shining Tor, Lamaload Reservoir, Kettleshulme, Taxal Moor and Fernilee Dam. The short route reaches Axe Edge and the Goyt Valley, returning via Fernilee Dam to Buxton. Car parking is at the College Road entrance, as directed by marshals. The event uses the Fabian4 timing system and all wristbands must be handed back at the finish. Under 18s may participate only when accompanied by a responsible adult. Dogs are not allowed. Refreshments are provided at checkpoints and a hot meal is provided at the finish; limited water will be available at Checkpoint 1. Vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free options can be provided. Participants should carry suitable kit for moorland and variable weather. Certificates are available to finishers on request. A buff and a logo mug are available for purchase. A night score event at The Railway Inn in Marple on Tuesday 27th January. Choose a 40, 60 or 75 minute course, use MapRun or a paper backup, and note late entries are not guaranteed a map.

Timed lap based event on a flat 5.3 km riverside out and back near Hardy Farm in Manchester, with flexible distances from 5 km to ultra and a seven hour time limit. Medal free entry option and a charity donation per finisher.

Take on the Dovedale Big Daddy on 1 February 2026, an AL fell race in the Peak District covering 20.4 km with 1370 m ascent and nine steep climbs through the Manifold and Dovedale valleys. Entries close 29 January and are limited to 250.

Take on the Mickleden Straddle on 1 Feb 2026, a rugged 14.3 mile fell race across high moorland with navigation required and winter conditions possible. Pre entry and FRA kit checks mean this is a demanding winter race for fell runners.
