Backyard Burn @ Fountainhead

The Fall Backyard Burn at Fountainhead Regional Park takes place in Fairfax County along the Occoquan Reservoir. The event features two course options that utilize a combination of hiking trails and old dirt roads within the park.

Participants can choose from the following distances:

  • 4.8 miles
  • 10.5 miles

The 4.8 mile course consists of a single loop. The 10.5 mile course includes the initial loop plus an additional out and back section on the Bull Run Occoquan Trail. The shorter course features approximately 450 feet of elevation gain, while the longer course includes roughly 1,000 feet of elevation gain.

The event provides professional race operations, including aid stations, medical support, and timing. Post-race activities include breakfast burritos and an awards ceremony. A dedicated program for children is available, which includes nature exploration and STEM activities, followed by a free kids race for ages 2-11.

The race site includes parking in paved lots and adjacent grass fields. Facilities include portajohns located at the start and finish area. Participants receive a tri-blend t-shirt or a water bottle as race swag. Finish medals are available as an optional add-on during registration.

Strict course rules are in effect: in-ear headphones, pets, pacers, and baby strollers are prohibited on the trails. There are no cut-off times for either distance. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
