Expedition 12K Trail Race

The Expedition 12K Trail Race takes place on April 26, 2026 at Lewis and Clark Caverns State Park near Whitehall, Montana. The event is a 12 kilometer trail race that follows primarily single-track trails with a few asphalt road crossings and overlooks the Jefferson Valley.

The course includes more than 2,200 feet of vertical gain and more than 2,100 feet of vertical loss. Trails are typically dry and clear of snow and mud, but mid-April conditions can be unpredictable so runners should prepare for variable weather.

Registration includes chip timing, park entry, a custom race shirt plus an additional custom item, post-race brunch and a drink, and eligibility for awards and raffle prizes. The published entry fee is USD 65.

There are two cupless aid stations on course. Participants must bring their own cup or hydration system or may purchase a reusable race cup with registration. Packet pickup is available Saturday at Bozeman Running Company and a reserved race morning pickup is offered at the park for traveling runners.

Event policies state there are no bib transfers, cancellations, or rollovers. Refunds are only available through REGSHIELD race insurance if that coverage was purchased at registration. Awards will be given in Male, Female and Non Binary categories.

The race asks participants to follow Leave No Trace principles, stay on designated trails, pack out trash and wrappers, and avoid cutting trails or switchbacks. Carpooling and following parking attendants is encouraged to manage limited parking. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
