The event stages ultradistance races along the Brisbane Valley Rail Trail in southeast Queensland. The 100 mile event starts at the Yarraman Heritage Centre, follows the entire BVRT to Brassall and finishes at the Ipswich Grammar School Playing Fields (IGS). The 100 mile route picks up the 50 mile start at Toogoolawah and the marathon start at Coominya. The 200 mile event starts at the IGS a day earlier, runs out to Yarraman, then turns and returns alongside 100 mile participants.

Full participants receive hydration, nutrition, electrolyte support and access to medical services along the BVRT course. Finishers receive an event garment, a tankard and a finishers medal upon completing their event. Pacers receive the same support as participants and are covered under the organiser’s public liability insurance. Crew is mandatory for the 200 mile event.

Entry notes mention an entry waiver and a refund policy to be read at registration. Early bird registration closed in 2024. To enter the 200 mile event participants must meet published qualifying criteria and have qualifying results available online; qualifying combinations and time exceptions are specified by the organiser. On 12 July 2026 the Somerset Rail Trail Classic offers running, walking and cycling options along the Brisbane Valley Rail Trail, with distances from 3 km to 44 km and a community focus under Somerset Regional Council.

A team relay along the South Burnett rail trail covering 60 km between Kingaroy and Wondai. Teams of five to eight run average 5 km legs and a 1 km kids race is included.
