Apache Junction, United States • 7 Feb 2026

Event overview

The BRAY Apache Junction Burro Derby takes place on Saturday, February 7, 2026, in Apache Junction, Arizona. The race starts and finishes at Prospector Park near the foot of the Superstition Mountains. The course is a loop through desert terrain of about 3-5 miles, mostly flat with a few small rolling hills. The event includes a Prospector Playday after the race with in-hand trail obstacle classes and a stick donkey rodeo; the playday accepts other equines, while the race is limited to donkeys.

Entry, rules and requirements

Teams consist of one runner and one burro (donkey). Entrants must arrange their own donkey teammate; BRAY does not provide animals. Runners must be at least 14 years old and may register a burro by creating a password-protected team name for the animal. Entry fees are required and are not refundable. The listed price for the event is $60.

All competing burros must have a negative Equine Infectious Anemia/Coggins test dated within one year and in the current owner’s name. BRAY performs veterinary checks before and after the race and may disqualify animals that are unsound, sick, injured, doped, or mistreated. Runners must keep their burros under control, use an approved halter and a single lead rope no longer than 15 feet, and remain the same team for the entire race. Carrying at least one quart of water and basic food and a small first aid kit for runner and burro is recommended. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
