The Black River Trail Classic takes place in Black River State Forest near Millston, Wisconsin. Races start and finish in the Smrekar Lot; State Forest headquarters and Castle Mound campgrounds are located in a different direction.
The forest was established in 1957 and covers approximately 68,000 acres in Jackson County. Trails run through woodlands and rolling terrain shaped by glaciation, with buttes, hills, knolls, ridges and pediments. Scenic overlooks and ridge views are noted features, and the event highlights fall colors.
Distances and entry fees:
- 10k - entry fee $50 $35
- 25k - entry fee $70 $55
- 50k - entry fee $85 $70
- 85k - entry fee $135 $120
The 85k distance combines the 10k, 50k and 25k courses in sequence and carries a 12 hour cut-off. Since 2022 there have been 11 finishers for the 85k.
All registrants receive a winter hat. Finishers earn handcrafted wooden medals. A personalized bib is offered for registrations before 9/1/26. First time 85k finishers receive a hooded sweatshirt and commemorative patch; subsequent 85k finishes earn additional patches. Other on course and finish line features include hot food, pies, chapstick and very well marked courses.
On site camping is available and several nearby hotels serve the area. The 2026 event is the 10th running of the race. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
