Event overview
The Black River Trail Classic is a trail running event held in Black River State Forest, Millston, WI. The 2025 event takes place on October 18 and is the ninth running of the race. Races start and finish in the Smrekar Lot. The state forest covers about 68,000 acres and features woodlands, rolling terrain, ridges, buttes and scenic overlooks formed by glaciation.
Courses and cut-off
Distances offered include:
- 10k
- 25k
- 50k
- 85k
The 85k is a combined route that follows the 10k course first, then the 50k course, and finishes with the 25k section. There is a 12 hour cut-off for the 85k. Since 2022 there have been 11 finishers of the 85k.
Amenities and logistics
All registrants receive a winter hat. Finishers receive handcrafted wooden finisher medals. Registered runners who signed up before 9/1/24 received a personalized bib. First-time finishers of the 85k receive a hooded sweatshirt and a commemorative patch; subsequent 85k finishes earn additional patches for the sweatshirt. The event provides hot food at the finish line and course markings are described as extremely well marked. On-site camping is available at Black River State Forest and a number of nearby hotels are listed as lodging options. Registration for 2026 opens in Spring 2026.
