Course and terrain

Both races are point-to-point and take place predominantly on the Continental Divide National Scenic Trail and the Continental Divide. The course follows the border area between Idaho and Montana, with Idaho’s Lemhi River Valley to the west and Montana’s Big Hole Valley to the east. Runners remain high on the divide and generally do not descend into the deep creek and river valleys except near the finish.

On the 100K, runners leave the official Continental Divide Trail at about mile 49, continue along the true Continental Divide border for about five more miles to mile 54, then drop off the divide and descend into the headwaters of Bohannon Creek toward the finish. The 55K covers the second half of the 100K, starting near the Lemhi Pass AS. The course includes climbs, descents, flats, and technical sections at relatively high elevation.
