Allerton Park Trail Run
The Allerton Park Trail Run takes place at the Robert Allerton Park and Retreat Center in Monticello, Illinois. Organized by the Second Wind Running Club, the event features multiple ways to participate in the natural surroundings of the park. A portion of the proceeds from the event is donated back to Allerton Park to support trail maintenance, erosion control, and park enhancements.
The event offers three distinct participation options:
- 5.7 Mile Trail Run: A competitive trail race.
- 2 Mile Nature Walk: A non-competitive walking event.
- VIRTUAL 5.7 Mile Trail Run: A remote option available from October 25 through October 31.
The 5.7-mile course follows the Sangamon River. Participants may encounter natural obstacles such as hidden roots, ruts, and sharp turns. Participants in the trail run compete for overall male and female awards, masters awards, and age group awards across categories ranging from 19 and under to 70 and over. The 2-mile nature walk is non-competitive and does not include timing awards.
The finish area is located in the meadow, providing a space for participants to gather. Due to the proximity to Halloween, the event includes a costume contest and door prizes. Participants who register by October 14 are guaranteed a race shirt, though a "no shirt" option is available during the registration process. For safety reasons, dogs are not permitted on the trail run or the nature walk.
If this race is used to qualify for the Monticello Triple Crown, participants must register by the October 14 deadline. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
