Aggies Staircase

Aggies Staircase is a Category AS fell race held in Darwen. The course is about 4 miles (6.4 km) with approximately 1148 ft (350 m) of ascent. The event is organised by Darwen Dashers and starts from Punstock Road green in Darwen, BB3 2SY.

The route climbs a footpath then turns right onto a track past Robin Hoods cottage, before following an enclosed footpath to the main track and up to Darwen Tower. It descends through a small quarry to the main track toward the top of Bold Venture Park, then turns right to climb Jacobs Mound; in 2026 this climb will be redirected to a more runnable line. The course continues across the moor top and down to the foot of Aggies Staircase.

Aggies Staircase is the shortest but steepest of the three climbs. From the top the route returns just below the Tower, then descends back toward Sunnyhurst. At the gate at the bottom competitors turn right to retrace steps past Robin Hoods cottage and then left down the path to finish at the top of Punstock Road. Tail runners may be directed by marshals onto a slightly shorter route if required.

Minimum age for entry is 14 or older. Entry fees are listed as £6.00 for FRA members and £8.00 for non members. Races are held in accordance with FRA safety requirements and rules for competition. Course maps are available from the organiser. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
