Aggies Staircase

Category AS fell race covering 4 miles / 6.4 km with approximately 1,148 ft / 350 m of ascent. The event starts on Punstock Road green in Darwen and follows a circular route that returns to the same green.

The route climbs a footpath and then follows a track past Robin Hoods cottage before moving onto an enclosed footpath and the main track up to a tower. It descends through a small quarry and runs along the main track toward the top of Bold Venture Park, then turns right to climb a rough path known as Jacob’s Mound. In 2026 that climb will be redirected to a more runnable line. The course continues across the moor top and down to the foot of Aggies Staircase. Aggies Staircase is described as the shortest but steepest of the three climbs. From its top the route returns just below the tower and descends toward Sunnyhurst, then follows paths back past Robin Hoods cottage to finish at the top of Punstock Road.

Organised by Darwen Dashers, the race is run under FRA safety requirements and rules for competition. Tail runners may be directed by marshals to a slightly shorter route if required. Minimum age for entry is 14. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
