Aggies Staircase is a Category AS fell race in the South/West Pennines, held in Darwen at Borough Rd, BB3 2SY. The course distance is 6.4 km / 4 miles with 350 m / 1148 ft of ascent. Minimum age is 14. The event has FRA permit and associated UK Athletics insurance.
Course
The route starts on Punstock Road green and follows footpaths and tracks to Darwen Tower. The course includes three climbs: Jubilee Tower, Jacob's Mound and Aggies Staircase. After the third climb the route returns below the Tower and retraces tracks past Robin Hoods cottage to the finish at the top of Punstock Road. Jacobs Mound will be routed onto a more runnable line in 2026. Marshals may direct tail runners onto a slightly shorter route if required.
Entry and administration
Pre-entry only; there are no entries on the day. Entry fees are £6 for FRA members and £8 for non-members. Entries open 1 January 2026 and close 22 June 2026. Teams are allowed: mens teams of four and womens teams of three. No junior races are held for this event.
Male and female course records are 00:27:30 (2011) and 00:32:36 (2017) respectively.
