Aggies Staircase - Darwen

Aggies Staircase is a Category AS fell race covering 4 miles / 6.4 km with 1148 ft / 350 m of ascent. The race starts on Punstock Road green and follows a mainly off-road route that includes three climbs: Jubilee Tower, Jacob's Mound, and Aggies Staircase. The route climbs a footpath, continues past Robin Hoods cottage and up to Darwen Tower, then descends through a small quarry toward Bold Venture Park.

After the quarry the route turns to climb Jacobs Mound; in 2026 this climb will be redirected to a more runnable line. The course then crosses the moor top and descends to the foot of Aggies Staircase. Aggies Staircase is the shortest but steepest of the three climbs. From its summit the route returns just below the Tower and follows the outward route back toward Sunnyhurst, passing Robin Hoods cottage before finishing at the top of Punstock Road.

Marshals may direct tail runners onto a slightly shorter route if required. The event is organised by Darwen Dashers and is held in accordance with FRA safety requirements and rules for competition. The minimum age for entry is 14. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
