The Wicked Windstone Loop
The Wicked Windstone Loop is a multi-distance trail event held at Windstone Landing Farms in Columbia Cross Roads, PA. The course is a 5 kilometer (3.1 mile) loop with mixed surfaces and rolling terrain. Distances offered include:
- 100 Mile
- 100K
- 50K
- 5K
A single loop features open and active farmland, pond views, rolling hills, wooded singletrack, pine forest, and natural trail sections. The loop begins beneath a willow tree, crosses a pond land bridge, follows a perimeter of eastern fields, traverses northern woodlands and creek corridors, and includes a hand-built log bridge and several recognizable landmarks on the property. Late in each lap runners encounter The Wall, a steep wooded climb rising from the swamp edge, before returning past campsites and the farmstead and completing a short out and back on Windstone Lane.
The 100 Mile distance uses an offset start about 0.934 kilometers before the main start/finish and requires 32 full loops of the course. Approximate elevation gains reported are ~320 ft per 5K loop, 3,000+ ft for the 50K (10 loops), 6,000+ ft for the 100K (20 loops), and 10,000+ ft for the 100 Mile effort.
At least once during the event a course reversal may be signaled by air horns or cowbells. When signaled runners complete the current lap, check in with the Race Director, then run subsequent laps in the opposite direction until the reversal ends; timing and duration are not specified. The 5K is not subject to the reversal.
Required and permitted equipment and support rules are specified for each distance. Headlamps or handheld lights are required for 100K and 100 Mile participants and recommended for 50K runners. GPS devices are permitted and may be requested by officials. Trekking poles are allowed for the 100K and 100 Mile distances. Pacers are permitted for the 100K and 100 Mile events only, subject to check in, waiver, one pacer at a time, and restrictions on assistance and supply staging.
Primitive on-site camping is included and restricted to the designated parking and camping area on Windstone Lane. No RV utility hookups are available. The official aid station is located within 0.5 kilometer of the start/finish and provides water, electrolytes, assorted drinks, snacks, and occasionally a hot evening meal. All registered participants receive an event t shirt, access to on-site camping, the official aid station, and finisher awards; specific medals and a belt buckle are issued by distance. Time cutoffs are published for each distance. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
