Wharf to Wharf Aotea : Great Barrier Island coastal crossing
The Wharf to Wharf is a community organised series of runs across Aotea Great Barrier Island that raises funds for Kaitoke School and honours the legacy of Barry Mouat. The event links two historic harbours and brings locals and visitors together for an island crossing with varied natural scenery.
The course types cover mixed terrain including trail, gravel roads, forestry tracks and island backcountry roads. Participants move through regenerating native forest, rolling farmland and a notable hill section at Whangaparapara that offers wide inland views. The event is run entirely by local volunteers and features local support along the route.
Distances offered:
- Marathon approximately 42.2 kilometres Port FitzRoy Wharf to Tryphena Wharf
- Half marathon approximately 21 kilometres with trail and road options
- 10 km from Medlands Beach to Tryphena Wharf
- 5 km fun run around Tryphena
Start and finish locations are on Aotea Great Barrier Island, with the marathon beginning at Port FitzRoy Wharf and finishing at Tryphena Wharf. Half marathon and shorter options start and finish at specified island locations. The event is positioned as a community fundraiser and celebration of island spirit rather than a city road race.
