Warriors Run : Strandhill
The Warriors Run is a competitive road and hill race held in Strandhill, County Sligo. The main event covers 15 Kilometre and follows a route from the beachfront at the Cannon Gun to the summit of Knocknarea and back around Queen Maeve’s Cairn.
The course combines paved roads and a central mountain section. Approximately nine kilometres are on paved roads. The middle six kilometres ascend to the summit and include a 700 foot climb across fields, loose gravel, unsurfaced tracks and heather paths. The ascent reaches steep inclines where runners commonly slow to a walk, followed by a descent over slopes that can be slippery even in dry weather.
Strandhill village lies about eight kilometres west of Sligo town on the Atlantic seaboard at the foot of Knocknarea, whose summit is 1,070 ft and hosts a megalithic cairn attributed to Queen Maeve. Each year around 1,200 runners take part and finish back at the beachfront. All competitors who complete the course receive a bespoke medal.
The event takes place in August; the 2026 edition is scheduled for Saturday 22nd August. Route details note that a new section crosses private property and is open only on race day, with public paths and roads advised for training. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
