Walking Tall 50/25k
The Walking Tall 50/25k takes place in Big Hill Pond State Park, located in Pocahontas, Tennessee. This trail running event is organized as a non-profit race, with proceeds benefiting the state park and the Tennessee Park Rangers Association. The courses consist almost entirely of single-track trails, with a small portion of park road included to manage the flow of participants.
Participants can choose between two primary distances:
- 50 km
- 25 km
The route features unique landmarks, including a swamp boardwalk that spans over half a mile and a fire tower. Runners are required to reach the top of the fire tower and have their bibs punched to be eligible for top three placement or course records. Those who reach the top also receive a special challenge coin. An alternative option is provided for those with a fear of heights, allowing them to complete the required number of stairs on the first floor of the tower to remain a legitimate finisher.
The 50 km course has a strict 9-hour time limit, while the 25 km course has an 8-hour limit. Aid stations are positioned along both routes, providing support at various mileage intervals. For the longer distance, a drop bag location is available at the halfway point. The terrain is rated as a 3 for elevation change and a 3 for surface according to standard magazine ratings. Camping is available within Big Hill Pond State Park for those wishing to stay on-site. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
