Vulture Vista Ultra : Year Four
Vulture Vista Ultra is a runner-built endurance event held at DePauw Nature Park in Greencastle, Indiana, set inside a reclaimed limestone quarry. The event returns for its fourth year on a course organized as a loop that brings runners back to a central start and finish area each lap.
The 4.5-mile loop passes towering limestone cliffs, wooded singletrack, exposed trails, and sweeping views of the quarry. The course includes steep climbs and is run in summer conditions. Turkey vultures are commonly seen above the quarry as runners complete laps.
Event formats include timed ultraruns and a single-loop trail run:
- 12-Hour Ultra, solo or relay, as many laps as possible in twelve hours.
- 6-Hour Ultra, solo or relay, as many laps as possible in six hours.
- 4.5-Mile Trail Run, one loop through the quarry.
The event provides two well-stocked aid stations featuring ultra-running staples and Tailwind nutrition, a centralized area for crews and self-support, and volunteers who staff aid and course locations. A portion of proceeds supports AKC, A Kinetic Change, and local middle school and high school cross country and track programs, funding equipment and race opportunities for young athletes.
The loop format creates frequent contact between runners, crews, volunteers, and families, emphasizing individual effort within a community setting. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
