About the race
The UTAX AXtrail 2026 is a trail running event scheduled from October 16 to October 18, 2026, in Castanheira de Pera, Portugal. This marks the twelfth edition of the AXtrail series and the eighth edition of the Ultra Trail das Aldeias do Xisto (UTAX). The event centers on the Schist Villages territory, combining sports with nature and local culture.
Participants can choose from several competitive and social distances:
- UTAX: A 103 km ultra trail with a 28-hour time limit.
- TSL: A 54 km race (including the ITRA National League European Final).
- Trail do Xisto (TX): A 33 km course with an 8-hour limit.
- Mini Trail do Xisto (MTX): A 16 km initiation race.
- Caminho do Xisto: An 8 km hike.
- Social events: AXtrail Kids and AXtrail da Inclusão for younger and social participants.
The event operates under a semi-autonomy principle, meaning runners must be self-sufficient between aid stations. Mandatory equipment is required for all participants. Registration fees typically include a post-race meal, official souvenir, personalized bib, finisher's medal (for UTAX, TSL, and TX), and access to solid and liquid refreshments. Showers and "hard floor" accommodation are also provided. The primary base for the event is Praça da Notabilidade in Castanheira de Pera.
