UK Wife Carrying Race : event overview

The UK Wife Carrying Race is an annual novelty running event held from Race HQ at The Priory School in Dorking, Surrey. The event follows a 380 m out and back course that climbs a steady 15 m ascent of The Nower and returns along the same route. Obstacles and water hazards are included on the course; spectators may attend the return leg splash zone with water pistols and buckets.

The event traces its origins to Scandinavia and was first run in the UK in 2008. The winning couple qualify for the World Wife Carrying Championships in Finland. Winners at the UK event receive a barrel of local ale; the first placed British finishers may receive a contribution towards travel expenses to the world championships subject to providing a write up and photos.

Entry rules require that the carried person be a living human at least 18 years old, and all carried entrants must weigh at least 50 kg at a pre-race weigh in. Anyone underweight must carry additional weight, typically in a rucksack. All carried participants must wear a helmet. Carriers may use recognised holds such as the bridal carry, piggy-back, shoulder ride, fireman’s carry, Estonian Hold or the Dorking Hold. Competitors are expected to wear fancy dress and novelty prizes are awarded for several categories.

The event uses local suppliers, encourages car sharing and public transport, and donates profits to Mid Surrey Community Fridges. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
