Tortugas Mountain 24 Hour Challenge
The Tortugas Mountain 24 Hour Challenge is a 24 hour trail race on Tortugas Mountain in Las Cruces, New Mexico. The event uses the Arroyo Loop trailhead at the Monte Vista Parking Lot as the start and finish area and follows a roughly four mile lap around the mountain.
The course is a rocky, rolling single track with some two-track sections. The first lap proceeds clockwise and subsequent laps alternate direction. The route is marked with orange or pink flagging with reflective tape, rock cairns, and brown BLM trail markers; flagging and reflective tape are continuously visible in line of sight.
Aid stations are located at the start/finish under the covered picnic area and at the two mile mark on course. Aid stations provide water and Heed electrolyte drink and offer minimal food, and the event is cupless so participants must bring their own drink vessels. Crews and supporters may attend the start/finish aid station.
Participants record each completed lap on a registration board at the start/finish and note the time corresponding to the official race clock. There is no requirement to be present for the entire 24 hour period; runners may leave and return and should mark themselves as away if they leave the course.
The event is offered as a free "Fatass" race with donations accepted for the Southern New Mexico Trail Alliance. The race is capped at 50 entrants; attendees are asked to cancel registrations they will not use and to consider donating lightly worn shoes to the local shelter.
