Tongariro River Trail – Turangi, Taupo
The event takes place at Taupahi Reserve in Turangi and uses the Tongariro River Trail through native forest and over swing bridges on Department of Conservation land. The course follows riverside tracks with clear river views and sections where anglers may be present.
Distances offered:
- 5 km short course
- 11.2 km mid course
- 14.5 km long course
Trail surface is approximately 90% well formed bush trail and 10% footpath. Elevation gain is about 44 m for the short course, 68 m for the mid course, and 103 m for the long course. The mid and long courses cross the river via Red Hut Bridge and Major Jones Bridge; the long course includes the short course loop in addition.
Participants receive coloured wristbands at check in that match course signage: yellow for short, blue for mid, pink for long. Green arrows mark the route; junctions have a border colour matching wristbands. There are pitstops on course offering snacks and water; participants are asked to bring a reusable cup and to carry any special dietary items they require.
Parking is available on nearby roads. First aid is based in the event village and a marshal system supports on-course incidents. Rules include no pets, no wheeled conveyances, appropriate footwear, and that participants under 13 must be accompanied by a guardian. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
