Three Forts Hill Trail Challenge
The Three Forts Hill Trail Challenge is a trail walk through Northumberland National Park that passes over Humbleton Hill Fort, Akeld Hill Fort and Yeavering Bell. The route covers 13.5 miles and includes just under 3000 feet of ascent, with many undulating sections and wide open views across the landscape.
The course is almost entirely off road and is waymarked with signs and flags; marshals are positioned at key points. There are three official checkpoints: CP1 at about 4.12 miles, CP2 at about 8.12 miles and the finish at 13.5 miles. Checkpoints 1 and 2 offer water, coke, sweet snacks and fruit, and hot drinks are available at the event base. There is an overall time limit of nine hours and additional cutoffs at checkpoints for safety.
First aid is provided at checkpoints and by a mobile ambulance and event staff on the route; in a serious emergency participants should call the emergency services. Entries include electronic timing, an event award for finishers, route marking and marshals, medical cover, free event parking and event photography, with the option to purchase an event t-shirt. Prizes are awarded for male and female finishers and by age category.
Mandatory kit must be carried during the event and includes a whistle, survival blanket, compass, maps (OS Explorer OL16 recommended), hat and gloves, waterproof jacket, full length leggings, at least 500 ml water, emergency food, a personal cup and a fully charged mobile phone.
