The Trailway links two park units and follows the lake shoreline through a mix of open, exposed sections and fully canopied forest tunnels. Terrain is generally rolling and mostly flat with hard-packed, rooted sections and areas of sand or loose soil. The event uses a lollipop-style loop. Course specifics: the 5K follows a unique eastward route; 10K and 13.1 mile courses start west with the half adding an out-and-back beyond the Wolf Pond aid station; the marathon repeats the half marathon loop; the 50K extends beyond the marathon turnaround.
Course markings include caution tape, yellow arrows, and confidence markers, with reflective markers for low light. Aid stations supply water, ice, gels, Tailwind, soft drinks, and food; drop bags are allowed at most stations except Wolf Pond. The event follows a cupless policy and Leave No Trace practices; littering may lead to disqualification. A Friday night pre-race tailgate includes packet pickup, a cookout, a pre-race briefing, and backyard games. The start and finish sit at the lake edge with a large grass lawn for spectators.
