The Ozark's Mountain Challenge - Hiking (Ascent only)
The event is an ascent-only hiking challenge in Patterson, Missouri held on May 1, 2027. Participants attempt eight ascents of Mudlick Mountain within a 12-hour window, a total vertical ascent of 7,980 feet and an approximate total distance of 23 miles. The organizers provide shuttle transports to return hikers to the trailhead after each successful ascent.
The route follows the Mudlick Hike Only Trail, continues on the Mudlick Equestrian and Hike Trail, and uses the spur to the Fire Tower Trail. The trail is rated hard by AllTrails for rugged terrain and steep sections that reach about 28 percent incline. The event is explicitly described as not a race; it is framed as an individual endurance challenge with encouragement available from other participants and volunteers. Completion of any number of ascents is recognized.
An optional Spark of Strength ceremony takes place the evening before the hike at the CCC Lodge on April 30. The ceremony involves a symbolic burning of written personal challenges and is offered at no cost with cold drinks provided; no preregistration is required for this optional activity.
Additional details: registration opens September 8, 2026; minimum participant age is 16; pets are not allowed on the trail; spectators may be present near the start area; there are no refunds and ticket transfers are not permitted after March 15, 2027. Registration includes food and beverages, aid station supplies, recovery tent services, and event swag. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
