Highland Ultra (Knoydart Peninsula, Scotland)
The Highland Ultra is a staged mountain ultramarathon on the remote Knoydart Peninsula in the West Highlands of Scotland. The race covers 125 km over three race stages across three days; the overall event runs for four days and uses Longbeach, Inverie as base camp and finish location. The route crosses mountain trails, bogs, rocky ascents and broad glens, with coastal sections and views across sea lochs.
Entries are available for solo runners or teams of 2, 3 or 4. Accommodation is in tents at race camps. Transfer logistics to and from the race are provided, and arrival and departure from the peninsula are by boat or on foot.
Runners carry mandatory kit listed in the race information pack and are expected to be self-sufficient between camps. Checkpoints are placed at approximately 10 km intervals and provide clean drinking water, a small shelter, a qualified medic and boiling water for meal preparation. The event also provides GPS tracking, manned checkpoints, storage and carriage of luggage, race T-shirt and finishers medal, and a celebratory meal at the finish. The entry fee includes a donation to a woodland project.
Practical details include a stated per-athlete fee of £795, a field limit of 90 places, a recommended qualifying finish of a marathon within the previous 12 months, and typical daytime temperatures from 5°C to 25°C. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
