The Hawkeye 200
The Hawkeye 200 is a semi self supported 200 mile route across Iowa that uses mostly paved trails that are inaccessible to motor vehicles. The route is mostly non repetitive and includes two out and back sections. Where trails are not connected, runners will encounter short dirt road diversions totaling about 10 miles; those diversions are the only portions where vehicle traffic may be present outside of standard road crossings and travel through towns.
The race begins in Marshalltown and finishes in Jefferson, following a mix of paved, crushed limestone, dirt, and grass surfaces. The route uses the Linn Creek Rec Trail, Iowa HWY 330 Trail, Heart of Iowa Nature Trail, High Trestle Trail, 9 Mile Connector Trail, and the Raccoon River Valley Trail. The event includes live GPS tracking by Legends Tracking USA and a cutoff of 100 hours for a mostly flat course.
Support is organized with seven fully stocked aid stations, all but the first planned as indoor sleep stations. Runners may sleep in crew vehicles at crew accessible aid stations and are expected to use services in towns along the trail during long stretches between aid stations. The event is listed as one of two races required for the Midwest Rail Trail Double and features annual changes to the finisher buckles.
The organizer specifies a strict refund and deferral policy: no refunds and no bib transfers. Entries may be deferred for race credit according to a schedule based on how far in advance the deferral is requested, with no deferrals within two weeks of race day.
