The Goat Adventure Run - Tongariro
The Goat is an alpine trail event of about 20km(ish) that runs from Whakapapa to Turoa along the Round the Mountain track in Tongariro National Park, a UNESCO Dual World Heritage Area. The course includes more than 1,000 metres of vertical ascent and crosses varied mountain terrain.
The route passes ancient lava flows and scoria fields, mountain beech forest and tussock grasslands, alpine herb fields, streams, waterfalls, and boulder-strewn rivers. Runners should expect mud, uneven ground, steep climbs and descents, and multiple stream and river crossings.
The event uses staggered wave starts from the top of Bruce Road to reduce environmental impact and spread runners by pace. There are safety cut offs including a checkpoint at 6.3 km; runners who miss cut-offs will be withdrawn from course and recorded as DNF. Minimum age to enter is 16 years on race day. Overall winners are the first to cross the finish line regardless of wave; age group placings use net time.
The Goat is self sufficient on course with no aid stations; finish line hydration and snacks are provided. Race entry includes the choice of a finisher medal or planting a tree, finish line food and drink options, and entry to an after event party. Registration requires a compulsory gear check. Required items include clean dry footwear, a thermal long sleeve top, thermal beanie and gloves, a thermal or survival style bag (blankets not acceptable), a whistle, a drink carrying device, and a seam sealed weather barrier jacket. A gear bag service and user pays bus transport options are available. The event asks participants to follow leave no trace practices and support local conservation initiatives.
