The Drop - Aberystwyth

The Drop is an orienteering-style event in Aberystwyth where participants are transported to an undisclosed drop-off and must make their way back to the event centre without navigational aids. On registration participants hand over electronic devices and receive a race number and an emergency bag. Blindfolds or blackout safety goggles are used during transport; alternatives are available on request.

From the moment participants leave the vehicle they navigate independently using no map, GPS, route guidance, compass, or external help. Distances are measured as the crow flies, so the actual route taken may be longer. Devices that record progress may be carried but must remain sealed in the emergency bag; breaking the seal results in disqualification. Only maps provided by organisers may be used if any are supplied.

Live GPS tracking is offered as an optional, paid feature for sharing and safety. Trackers are generally accurate to about five metres but performance can vary in areas with poor signal. For best results the tracker should be placed in an outside pocket with a clear view of the sky. All trackers must be returned at the finish or a replacement fee applies.

Available distances:

  • 15 miles measured as the crow flies
  • 10 miles measured as the crow flies
  • 6 miles measured as the crow flies

Local logistics note that parking is available in the town centre and the nearest railway station and bus station are a short walk from the event HQ. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
