Cheviots Challenge - Long Run

The Cheviots Challenge long route is organised to raise funds for the Northumberland National Park Mountain Rescue Team, a voluntary organisation that provides a 24 hour search and rescue service. The 45th Cheviots Challenge takes place on 04 September 2027 and starts and finishes at the Rose & Thistle Inn in Alwinton, Northumberland. The event is run in partnership with Trail Outlaws and can be completed as a walk or as a running race.

The 'Terry Lynn' long route is approximately 22 miles with over 4265 feet of ascent and runs through Upper Coquetdale and the Cheviot Hills. The course will be marked and taped and marshals will be positioned at key points. There are numerous checkpoints along the route that must be visited before their cut off times, and a feeding station is provided where the long and short routes split.

Participants must carry mandatory equipment at all times and are responsible for their own navigation. Mandatory kit includes suitable footwear, waterproof top and trousers, a spare warm layer, a functioning torch and whistle, a basic first aid kit, map and compass and a survival bivi bag, plus reserve food and drink. The race must be completed within ten hours.

Staffed checkpoints can provide first aid and the start and finish area will have first aid provision including a paramedic and a Mountain Rescue Ambulance. All finishers receive a bespoke medal, entry includes a complimentary snack, and free parking and digital photography are provided. Dogs are not permitted and headphones are not allowed except for bone conducting earphones. Littering will result in disqualification.
