The Bad Thing 2026
The Bad Thing is a point to point trail race along the Maitland Trail in Huron County, Ontario, finishing at the Auburn Riverside Retreat on October 24, 2026. The event offers two distance options.
- 50K
- 25K
The 50K course begins in Goderich and finishes in Auburn. The 25K course starts roughly at the halfway point of the 50K route. The course is made up mainly of single track and includes some road and groomed trail sections. Organizers describe the trail as highly technical and potentially muddy, and participants should expect difficult terrain. The event is not intended for inexperienced trail runners.
Because the race is point to point, runners are transported by bus from the Auburn Riverside Retreat to the start location. Check-in at the Auburn Riverside Retreat is required before boarding; the bus ride and the pre race briefing on the bus are mandatory for all participants. Minimum age for participants is 18 years.
All participants receive food and event items including barbeque chicken, pulled pork and a vegan option, a Culbert's Creampuff, a race shirt, beer or cider with non alcoholic options, fresh pressed juice, and a swag bag. Registration opened May 1, 2026; entries are shown as sold out. Sales are final and registrations are non refundable and non transferable. If the event is cancelled and not rescheduled, fees less online registration charges will be applied to the following year. Event fundraising lists CA$2,750 raised for The Maitland Trail Association with a CA$1,000 goal. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
