About the race
Summits of the North York Moors Ultra is a circular footrace of about 120 miles with roughly 16,000 ft of elevation, held entirely within the North York Moors National Park. The route visits the ten highest hills in the moors and follows portions of the Cleveland Way, Esk Valley Walk and Lyke Wake Walk, using defined tracks and ancient trods across hills and moorland.
The course passes archaeological features such as burial mounds, medieval boundary stones, ancient crosses and Bronze Age earthworks. Indoor checkpoints are located at circa 40 and 80 miles, with additional outdoor checkpoints along the route. Indoor checkpoints offer hot water, tea and coffee, snacks and some hot food options including Super Noodles, Pot Noodles, jacket potatoes and some vegan and gluten free choices. Participants may rest at indoor checkpoints while the race clock continues.
Organisers provide a tracker and a GPX file of the route. Each participant may have one medium sized drop bag carried to the indoor checkpoints. Support crews are permitted with a maximum of three people and one vehicle; assistance is allowed only at designated checkpoints except in emergency or DNF situations. Pacers and support runners are not allowed although participants may run alongside one another. Sticks, headphones and preplaced equipment caches are not permitted.
The event limits entries to 70 participants and has a minimum age of 18. A detailed mandatory kit list is enforced and all finishers receive a bespoke medal. The race is organised by SilverBackTrails. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
