Skunk Ape Night Run - Dade City, FL
The Skunk Ape Night Run is a trail race organized by Skunk Ape Events at the Green Swamp West Tract near Dade City, Florida. The event features a single trail distance of 30K that runs across a variety of Florida surfaces, including pasture lanes, mud, dirt roads, single-track on the Florida Trail, sandy hills, fire berms, grass horse trails and occasional creek crossings.
The course follows marked roads and trails such as Cumpressco Road, Rangers Landing Road, Cedar Pocket Road and sections of the Florida Trail, including a Berm loop that runners pass twice. Course marking includes reflective tape, pink flagging and turn signs with self-correcting information. One drop bag zone is available at the Berm Aid Station; drop bags are returned to the start/finish after that aid station packs up.
Aid stations are placed approximately every 3 to 5 miles and are stocked with beverages, snacks (soda, chips, cookies, pickles, gummy candies, produce), electrolyte powder and basic first aid supplies; women’s hygiene items will be available in a plastic box at aid stations.
Finishers receive a choice of a pint glass, whiskey glass, orange juice glass, mug or cup, plus event stickers. Awards are given to the top four men and top four women overall. There is a post-race potluck for which a separate fee is noted, and camping in the Green Swamp is available with a free reservation required. The event notes local wildlife and historical reports of Skunk Ape sightings in the area.
The race follows standards from Trail Sisters, the American Trail Running Association, the International Trail Running Association and the International Association of Ultrarunners and practices Leave No Trace principles. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
