About the race
Lamplighter 40 is an overnight trail running event held on a circular route from Goathland Village Hall across the North York Moors. Runners traverse tracks, open moorland and forestry and visit triangulation pillars, cairns, crosses and other checkpoint locations as they run from sunset to sunrise.
The course includes checkpoint refreshments with water, fizzy pop and snacks, and one indoor checkpoint serving pizza plus hot and cold drinks. Hot food is available at the finish with some vegetarian and gluten free options. Entrants receive a tracker and are provided with a GPX file and a master map to assist navigation. Total time is circa 12 hrs.
Entry is available for solo runners or pairs, with pairs required to remain together unless one drops out. Entry fees listed are £50 solo and £95 per pair. Entrants are limited to 40 and minimum age is 18. All finishers receive a Lamplighter medal and there are mementos for the first male and first female finishers. An optional event technical T shirt is available for purchase for £18 via the club shop.
Each entrant must carry specified kit including a map, working compass and whistle, headtorch with spare, emergency bivvy bag, spare warm clothing, waterproofs, charged mobile and battery pack, at least 500 ml of drink, at least 60 g of emergency food and a cup for checkpoint drinks. Parking at the village hall is limited to marshals but there is ample parking elsewhere in the village. Entrants can rest in the village hall before travelling home.
