Northern Traverse
The Northern Traverse is a 300 km ultra that follows Wainwright’s coast to coast route from St Bees on the west coast to Robin Hood’s Bay on the east coast. The route crosses three national parks: the Lake District, the Yorkshire Dales and the North York Moors, and includes about 6,500 m of ascent.
The event emphasises self-sufficiency. The route is not fully waymarked but is an established national hiking trail; participants receive a pre-marked waterproof map, a digital map and a GPX file. The course is defined by staffed Aid Stations and virtual Intermediary Guidance Times; there are cut-offs and a course closure time after which arrivals are non-competitive. Retiring is permitted only at Aid Stations.
Aid Stations provide hot and cold drinks, sandwiches, hot savoury food, cakes, fruit and breakfast options; most stations have medics, indoor space or tents and at some locations there are showers and sleeping tents. A single Support Point Drop Bag service is available with a maximum size of 80 L and weight 15 kg. Mandatory kit is checked at registration and additional exceptional weather items may be required during the event; a survival bag is specifically required.
Event rules cover route safety, race numbers, no headphones on road sections, restrictions on external assistance and the prohibition of support runners. Live GPS tracking and digital timing are provided for participants. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
