About the race

Signpost Challenge Hike is organised by South Manchester LDWA and is based in Marple, near Stockport. The hilly, scenic route heads north and east from Marple, passing over Werneth Low, Cown Edge, Lantern Pike and Chinley Churn in the High Peak, then returns to Marple via the Goyt Valley way.

If weather permits, participants may see views over Manchester, the South Pennines and the Peak District. The routes pass through villages and areas of industrial heritage. The long route crosses the Millennium Walkway in New Mills. The event includes the additional task of spotting distinctive green PNFS footpath signs along the way.

There is a choice of two routes:

  • 24 miles, 4,300 ft ascent to be completed in 10 hours
  • 17 miles, 3,000 ft ascent to be completed in 10 hours

Note there will be some minor route changes approaching Charlesworth to avoid damaged stiles. Each route has three outdoor checkpoints and one indoor checkpoint. The long route uses the Hayfield Scout Hut as the indoor checkpoint; the short route uses the Children’s Inn at Rowarth. Drinks and snacks are provided at checkpoints; participants are asked to bring a mug.

The event HQ and start/finish are at Marple Senior Citizens Hall, Memorial Park Drive, Marple SK6 6BA. Parking is available at Chadwick Street and Hollins Lane public car parks. Entry includes tea or coffee and pastries at the start, snacks and drinks at checkpoints, a hot meal at the finish, and a certificate for all finishers. Dogs are not allowed. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
