About the race
Signpost Challenge Hike is a hill walk event based in Marple, held on 18 October 2026 and organised by South Manchester LDWA. The route heads north and east from Marple, passing over Werneth Low, Cown Edge, Lantern Pike and Chinley Churn in the High Peak, then returns via the Goyt Valley way. Participants are invited to spot the distinctive green Peak and Northern footpath signs along the way.
There are two route options with elevation gain noted and a 10 hour completion limit:
- 24 miles / 4,300 ft
- 17 miles / 3,000 ft
Each route includes three outdoor checkpoints and one indoor checkpoint providing drinks and snacks. The long route passes through Hayfield and uses the Scout Hut as the indoor checkpoint; the short route uses the Children’s Inn at Rowarth as its indoor checkpoint. The event makes minor route changes near Charlesworth to avoid damaged stiles. The event headquarters, start and finish are at Marple Senior Citizens Hall, Memorial Park Drive, Marple SK6 6BA.
Entry includes tea, coffee and pastries at the start, refreshments at checkpoints and a hot meal at the finish; all finishers receive a certificate. Participants should bring a mug for drinks. Parking is available on Chadwick Street and Hollins Lane public car parks. No dogs are allowed. Minimum age 16 or older. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
