Signpost Challenge Hike
Hosted by South Manchester LDWA and based in Marple near Stockport, this walk follows a hilly, scenic route to the north and east of Marple. The routes pass over Werneth Low, Cown Edge, Lantern Pike and Chinley Churn, then return to Marple via the Goyt Valley Way. The long route crosses the Millennium walkway in New Mills and both routes pass through villages and areas of industrial heritage. If the weather is kind, there are views over Manchester, the South Pennines and the Peak District.
Participants must complete their chosen route within 10 hours and try to spot the distinctive green PNFS footpath signs along the way. Note there will be some minor route changes approaching Charlesworth to avoid damaged stiles.
There is a choice of routes:
- 24 miles with about 4,300 ft ascent
- 17 miles with about 3,000 ft ascent
Each route includes three outdoor control points and one indoor control point, with drinks and snacks available. The long route uses the Scout Hut in Hayfield as an indoor control point; the short route uses the Children’s Inn at Rowarth. Entry includes refreshments at the start, snacks at the control points and a hot meal at the finish. Participants should bring a mug. Event HQ is Marple Senior Citizens Hall, Memorial Park Drive SK6 6BA. Parking is available at Chadwick Street and Hollins Lane public car parks. No dogs allowed.
