Sfakia Sky Marathon

Sfakia Sky Marathon is a mountain race in Sfakia, Chania, Crete that runs from the Libyan Sea up into the White Mountains (Lefka Ori). The course covers about 44 km with approximately +3,050 m of elevation gain and about -2,480 m of descent. The route begins at the coastal village of Loutro, includes a long continuous ascent through remote high plateaus such as the Katsiveli plateau near 2,000 m, and reaches the summit of Pachnes at 2,453 m before finishing in Anopoli.

The route combines technical mountain trails, long uphill sections, and extended downhill stretches. Runners pass traditional stone mitata and open highland landscapes with views of the Libyan Sea to the south and a wide “sea of peaks” to the north. The event includes transport by ferry to the isolated start village of Loutro, reflecting the remote character of the course. A time limit for completion is set at 10 hours 30 minutes. After the race, participants receive a traditional meal in Anopoli.
