Run the Borders

Run the Borders is a trail ultra organised by Breaking Strain that follows the Borders Abbeys Way, a circular route through the central Scottish Borders. The full route is approximately 109 km, visits the ruined abbeys of Melrose, Dryburgh, Kelso and Jedburgh, and links the towns of Melrose, Kelso, Jedburgh, Hawick and Selkirk. The course includes river banks, farm tracks, trails, quiet country roads and up to 50 percent tarmac, with almost 1,900 metres of ascent on the full route.

There are multiple event formats and support provisions:

  • 109 km full solo
  • 50 km
  • 109 km relay for teams of four

The 109 km event has 12 checkpoints, five drop bag locations and a 20 hour time limit. The 50 km route has four checkpoints, one drop bag location and a 10 hour time limit. All participants must carry specified mandatory kit including a GPS tracker, mobile phone, foil blanket and water bottle; full kit lists are provided to entrants. The route is waymarked and the organiser supplements signage with event signs; there will be marshals, first aid cover and a sweeper. Accessibility measures include generous cut offs, the option to form relays and allowances for support crews at stated checkpoints. The organiser also operates an inclusivity and deferral policy for pregnancy and provides adjustments where feasible for participants with disabilities. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
