About the race
Run for Kids Challenge is a trail running fundraiser held at Oak Mountain State Park in Pelham, AL. The event is organized by Southeastern Trail Runs and donates 100% of race proceeds beyond basic expenses to Smile-A-Mile. Runners may also raise additional donations for the charity.
The event uses a 3.4 mile loop as its primary course. The 10K consists of two laps of that loop. The 12 Hour Challenge is a lap-based timed event that uses the 3.4 mile loop for most of the race, then switches to shorter laps of 0.82 mile and 0.20 mile near the end; runners must pass under the arch each lap for the lap to count. An aid station is located at the Cedar Pavilion, which serves as the lap turnaround and timing area.
Timing is provided with HuTag ankle timing chips that strap to the ankle on a neoprene band; wearing crew length socks is recommended so the tag sits on fabric rather than bare skin. The event includes a free Kids Half, a roughly one half mile race for children that follows the 10K finish. Awards include overall and age group prizes for the 10K and 12 Hour races, with finisher awards for all 12 Hour finishers. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
